She Left Me…Wanting

I wanted the peace that only comes with silence

that pleasure that only comes with love

but all she had to sell me was confusion

from a sacramental bottle

she kept there behind her, resting on the bar of our religion

I licked my lips, overcome with wanting

and so, the music of glasses

filling and refilling

became the hit parade

of my evening

exchanging my senses

for the joy that only comes to the senseless

my head was aflame with her fire

I never felt better

even though she left me staggering

I loved her then, like a slave loves his master

when she smiled, I was laughing

when she beckoned, I was dancing

even as I was drowning in a sea of pounding noise

that only left me restless

lying there, alone, in the morning after

cuddling the realization

that whispers ever louder

with the stench of the sun

the realization that of all we were boasting of

in that neon splashed evening

all that were laughing at

during our rite of celebration

there is now nothing remaining

and I am still searching

for the peace that only comes with silence

for that pleasure that only comes with love
